We’re at a pivotal moment in the legislative session—committee deadlines are fast approaching, House votes on Death with Dignity bills are underway, and we’re steadily moving toward some medical aid in dying legislation reaching the finish line!

Here’s the latest update:

Bill Introductions

North Carolina introduced H410, a medical aid in dying study bill, directing the NC Institute of Medicine to assess the pros and cons of legalizing MAID. The study will examine 17 key areas, including existing state laws, patient demographics, provider opt-outs, psychological impacts, and safeguards against coercion. The bill is now in the House Rules, Calendar, and Operations Committees.

We value medical research. A recent study by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Network revealed widespread confusion about where MAID is legal—over half of respondents were unsure about their own state. The findings also highlight racial disparities in awareness and access, raising urgent questions about equity in end-of-life care. Learn more about JAMA Network’s medical aid in dying study here.

Committee Referrals

Bill language was added to California’s SB403, removing the sunset date of January 31, 2031. By repealing the expiration section of the law, the bill would make the End of Life Option Act a permanent statute, allowing qualified patients to continue accessing this end-of-life medical option indefinitely. The bill was re-referred to the Senate Rules Committee. We’re supportive of states removing their sunset dates, making Death with Dignity a permanent option for terminally ill individuals who seek a compassionate end-of-life option.

Public Hearings and House Votes

HUGE win in Delaware! The Ron Silverio/Heather Block Delaware End of Life Options Act (HB140) has officially passed the House of Representatives 21-17! This is a major step toward making Death with Dignity a reality in Delaware. Now, HB140 moves to the Senate, and we need Delaware residents to contact their state senators and let them know that Death with Dignity is an essential human right.

Delaware residents: You’ve already sent over 3,800 letters urging lawmakers to advance HB140—let’s keep the momentum going! Now, we need your help making sure the Senate votes YES on HB 140. Write to your Delaware senators here!

The New Hampshire House of Representatives voted on HB254, with a motion to table the bill passing by an incredibly narrow margin of 183-182. This means the bill will not advance to the Senate for now—but because it remains tabled, lawmakers can revisit and vote on it at any point during the current legislative session.

While we’re disappointed by this setback, we remain hopeful, vigilant, and committed to fighting for end-of-life freedom in New Hampshire.

In Massachusetts, the Joint Committee on Public Health has scheduled a hearing for the Massachusetts End of Life Options Act (S.1486/H.2505) on Wednesday, April 2, at 9:00 a.m. This hearing is a critical opportunity to advance medical aid in dying legislation in the state.

Massachusetts residents: The most impactful way to support this bill is by submitting written testimony to the committee. Your voice can help demonstrate the strong public support for end-of-life options. Submit your testimony for Massachusetts today via this link.

Opposition Bills

In Montana, the House Judiciary voted 11-9 to move SB136 forward. This dangerous bill could ban Death with Dignity in Montana—and final votes could happen as soon as THIS WEEK.

If you live in Montana and support end-of-life freedom, NOW is the time to take action. Write a letter to your Montana senators and tell them you oppose SB136! No one, especially the government, should tell you how to die.
