As legislative sessions wrap up in many states this month, here are updates on two key states where Death with Dignity bills have been under consideration:

  • Massachusetts: Over the last few weeks, residents of the Commonwealth sent over 1600 letters to legislators, urging them to prioritize passing the End of Life Options Act (S.1384). And, efforts have paid off. The Joint Committee on Health Care Financing has extended the deadline for the bill until July 31. This extension gives us until the end of the legislative session to keep pushing – and that’s exactly what we’re going to do!
  • New York: The New York State Legislative session ended on June 3 and unfortunately, New York’s Medical Aid in Dying Act (A.4321/S.6471) will not advance this year. While this is disappointing, supporters and advocates made a tremendous impact during this session, sending over 3600 letters to lawmakers and gaining legislative support.

In every place where Death with Dignity is currently legal, we have fought and won long campaigns that span multiple years. We will continue our efforts year after year until legislation is passed.
