Earlier this month, Death with Dignity got the chance to sit down with legislators from across New York and speak with them about why they support Death with Dignity. The conversations provided an amazing insight into the professional backgrounds, religious beliefs, family members, and constituent stories that turned each legislator into a champion for the New York Medical Aid in Dying Act.
”If I can help end the suffering for those who are dying and help their final words to be ‘I love you’ to a spouse or family member, rather than a penetrating moan, then I have done the right thing, and I have done a good thing.”
As a nurse, Assemblymember Phara Souffrant-Forrest has been at the bedsides of countless patients who, at the end of their lives, wish only to have comfort and peace. However, for too many of them, death becomes a lonely and painful exercise in suffering. She supports Death with Dignity so that fewer patients are left without options and so, as a practitioner, she is able to offer her patients holistic care that helps them be as comfortable as possible.
