We’re incredibly proud of the progress made this session, thanks to the tireless efforts of advocates and supporters like you. New York is just one week and one vote away from making Death with Dignity a reality. In California and Maine, legislation has cleared the House/Assembly, and both are on their way to the Senate.
Here’s the latest:
- New York has just one week left in their legislative session, and we’re hopeful for a Senate vote in the coming days!
NY Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said today she believes the votes are there and a Senate vote is likely. S138 has already passed the Assembly. New Yorkers: This is one of your last chances to speak up. Urge your Senator to take action and vote YES on the Medical Aid in Dying Act (S138)!
- SB403, the amendment to the California End of Life Option Act that would eliminate the sunset clause and make the law permanent, has passed its third reading in the Senate 26-6 in favor and now heads to the Assembly. We’ll be keeping a close eye on how this bill moves through the Assembly in the coming weeks.
- Maine’s LD613, an amendment to the Maine Death with Dignity Act, passed the House of Representatives 74-64 in favor and now heads to the Senate floor for a vote in the coming weeks. The amendment would allow attending physicians to waive any portion or all of the waiting periods if it’s in the best interest of the qualified patient.
Your commitment powers Death with Dignity. Thanks to your support, we’ve made meaningful strides this year—but the journey is far from over.
With legislative sessions wrapping up quickly, we’re here to keep you updated and involved every step of the way. Together, we’ve built strong momentum, but protecting and advancing end-of-life options still requires urgent action.
