As state legislative sessions wind down, we’re still seeing incredible legislative movement. This week, we’re celebrating historic progress in New York, and in states amending their Death with Dignity laws, we’re seeing steady, meaningful strides forward.

From Albany to Augusta, passionate communities are showing what’s possible when people speak up for compassionate end-of-life care. We’re not at the finish line yet—but we’re closer than ever.

Here’s the latest:

Assembly Floor Vote

New York just made history! The Assembly passed the Medical Aid in Dying Act (A136) in an 81-67 vote. We’re incredibly proud of our New York advocates—this session alone, we’ve rallied our community to send over 33,500 letters urging lawmakers to support Death with Dignity. Thank you, New Yorkers!

We’re especially grateful to our proud bill sponsors, including lead sponsor Assemblymember Amy Paulin, who shared her powerful story about her sister’s end-of-life experience.

Read how we’re thanking the New York legislative champions who made this moment possible.

The Medical Aid in Dying Act is now in the Senate Health Committee—but it still has a long road ahead. Just like in the Assembly, the bill must receive a hearing to move forward. New Yorkers: Now is the time to speak up. Urge the Senate Health Committee to take action and vote YES on A136!

Public Hearings

SB403, the amendment to the California End of Life Option Act that would eliminate the sunset clause and make the law permanent, has passed the Senate Judiciary Committee with a 10-1 vote and is now headed to the Senate Appropriations Committee.

The next hearing is scheduled for Monday, May 12. A vote may take place—we’re tuning in live at 10 AM PST to watch the proceedings here. Not able to join? Make sure you’re signed up for our emails, and we’ll update you with the latest.

Maine’s LD613, an amendment to the Maine Death with Dignity Act, was tabled following a recent work session. A vote is expected soon, once the bill sponsor and legal analyst clarify the process and finalize language placement. This amendment would allow attending physicians to waive some or all of the waiting periods when it is in the best interest of the qualified patient.

Our grassroots partner, Maine Death with Dignity, has been a pivotal force from the very beginning. They advocated for the law long before its passage in 2019, and now are working to ensure more terminally ill Maine residents can access this peaceful option. To our advocates in Maine, we’re proud to support and work side by side with you to protect and expand end-of-life freedom together.

Thank you for being a driving force in the Death with Dignity movement. Because of your dedication, we’ve seen powerful progress this year—but there’s more work ahead.

As legislative sessions move quickly, we’re committed to keeping you informed and engaged at every turn. Together, we’ve built real momentum—but the fight to protect and expand end-of-life options isn’t over.

Help us continue this progress by making a charitable gift to fuel our legal and policy efforts nationwide.
