The Lunar New Year reminds us of life’s cycles—of new beginnings, reflection, and growth.

As we step into the Year of the Wood Snake, our Death with Dignity movement finds ourselves in a new political environment. The themes of wisdom, resilience, and transformation associated with the snake in Chinese astrology are incredibly relevant this year, as national changes feel unpredictable. When it comes to protecting end-of-life options, we at Death with Dignity remain vigilant.

The Year of the Wood Snake: Wisdom and Resilience in a Time of Change

The Year of the Snake symbolizes wisdom, transformation, and the acceptance of life’s inevitable cycles. The snake sheds its skin, an act that represents renewal, growth, and adaptability—qualities that are especially relevant in today’s ever-changing world. But the Wood Snake, in particular, adds an element of stability and groundedness to these themes. Wood represents life, growth, and resilience, emphasizing a natural balance between flexibility and rootedness.

This year we are leaning on the 30 years of wisdom our Death with Dignity movement has taught us, transforming our fight in a time when you need our resilience most.

This year, we’ve already taken action to support legislation of Death with Dignity in Delaware, New York, Indiana, New Hampshire, Montana, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Missouri—and it’s not even February yet! You can read more about our work so far here.

Vital and Compassionate Conversations About Death

Our team at Death with Dignity talks about death and dying a lot—it’s a topic we’re familiar with, and we understand it’s not easy or comfortable for everyone, and even taboo in some cultures. The importance of having compassionate, open conversations about death is critical to ensure loved ones feel supported. Talking about death can build empathy and foster understanding. The Wood Snake—with its grounding energy—asks us to face these fears head-on, to reflect on the values that matter most to us, and to create space for honest, respectful discussions about what it means to die with dignity.

In many cultures, including those that celebrate the Lunar New Year, there is a reverence for ancestors and those who have passed. It is a time when we honor those who came before us, reflecting on their lives and their legacy. These moments of reflection can also serve as a reminder to ensure that those who are nearing the end of their lives are given the respect and autonomy they deserve.

And with this new moon and new year, we wish you a happy Lunar New Year! May it bring you transformation, growth, and wisdom throughout every moment in the year of the snake, and know we’re fighting with you, and for you—with love and dignity.

Understanding Death with Dignity

Death with Dignity, or medical aid in dying, is a legal framework that allows qualified terminally ill patients to make decisions about their own end-of-life options. Unlike euthanasia, this decision is entirely in the hands of the patient, who must meet specific legal requirements and ensure that their choice is voluntary and unassisted by healthcare professionals.

In a broader cultural and philosophical sense, Death with Dignity speaks to the importance of autonomy, compassion, and respect for the wishes of individuals as they approach the final chapter of their lives. At a time when political polarization is rampant and healthcare systems are under strain, ensuring that individuals have control over their end-of-life choices is a vital part of preserving dignity–and for many of us, that starts with a conversation.
