We’re in the middle of most states’ legislative sessions, and we’re still seeing momentum build for aid-in-dying legislation, especially in the Midwest and Southern regions of the United States.

Here’s a snapshot of what’s happening:

New Medical Aid in Dying Bills
  • Missouri introduced the Death with Dignity Act (HB3497), a bill that would legalize aid in dying in the state. This bill is championed by Republican State Representative Carolyn Caton. This introduction comes weeks after the other Death with Dignity bill in the House, Marilyn Teitelbaum Death with Dignity Act (HB2188), championed by Democrat Representative Ian Mackey. Both House bills have the same language about legalizing Death with Dignity in Missouri, but have different legislative sponsors. We are thrilled these bills have bipartisan support.

If you are a Missouri resident, send a letter to your legislators today to ensure HB3497/HB2188 sees the finish line this session! If you live outside of Missouri, share this pre-written letter with your Missouri community so they can tell their legislator to support medical aid in dying in 2 minutes or less!

  • Wisconsin introduced the Our Care, Our Options Act (SB1114), a bill that would legalize medical aid in dying in the state. It was read for the first time and referred to the Committee on Licensing, Regulatory Reform, State and Federal Affairs. SB1114 has eighteen cosponsors, and we’re hopeful the bill gains good momentum this session!
  • Georgia has introduced the Georgia Death and Dignity Act (SB610), a bill that would legalize medical aid in dying in the state. The legislation has been read and referred to the Health and Human Services Committee, marking the first time Georgia has introduced a medical aid-in-dying bill since 2020.

The crossover deadline, the date by which a bill must pass out of its chamber of origin, was March 6, and SB610 did not meet that deadline. However, the bill remains technically active until the session ends on April 2, and in state legislatures, anything can happen. We are encouraged by the strong support SB610 received, including eight bill sponsors, and we look forward to seeing this important legislation continue its journey in the 2027 session.
