As advocates for compassionate end-of-life care options, we, the people of New York, urge you to support and pass the New York Medical Aid in Dying Act (A995/S2445) in the 2024 legislative session. 

Dying patients across New York must be granted this most personal and basic freedom to control their own end-of-life decisions. By enacting the New York Medical Aid in Dying Act, you will affirm New York’s commitment to upholding the principles of compassion, autonomy, and individual liberty. You will grant terminally ill New Yorkers the peace of mind that comes from knowing they have control over their final days, sparing them unnecessary suffering.

The fundamental principles of autonomy, dignity, and compassion underscore the importance of ensuring that individuals facing terminal illness have the right to make decisions about their own bodies and lives. Medical aid in dying is about providing terminally ill individuals with the option to end intolerable suffering on their own terms, with the support of their healthcare providers and loved ones.

Over the past decade, support in New York has grown to 73%, according to the most recent poll conducted by YouGov in January of this year. New Yorkers of all backgrounds, regardless of race, religion, age, gender, and political party, favor medical aid in dying legislation overwhelmingly. 

In addition, the New York Medical Aid in Dying Act has gained institutional support across the state, including recent endorsements by the New York State Bar Association and the Medical Society of the State of New York. 

The time has come for New York to give dying and suffering patients the right to control their deaths.

As your constituents, we urge you to support the New York Medical Aid in Dying Act (A995/S2445) this session and ensure that it is voted on and approved. Please, act now.
